Adelaide Oval

Adelaide has a proud history of sporting achievements for such a small (population-wise) state and  we are proud of our newest sporting arena, the new Adelaide Oval,a world class sporting venue.

It was not initially supported by everyone as it was expensive to build and many thought the money could have been better spent elsewhere, but three years on it is now accepted by most as a great asset to our fair city. It has been praised and acclaimed as one of the great sporting venues by everyone who visits as spectators or players and it has become a "must see" for interstate and overseas visitors.

Approached across landscaped parklands on the banks of the River Torrens, the oval is an impressive sight. In the football season the walkway across the Torrens is a sea of happy footballer followers dressed either in the red, blue and yellow of the Adelaide Crows or the black, white and teal of the Port Power AFL teams.

The entries  to the stadium are modern and streamlined and designed for quick and easy access and visitors are greeted by images of some of Adelaide's favourite sporting heroes

Inside are impressive foyers, wide walkways and a host of function rooms, meeting rooms, displays, bars, restaurants and museums.

But the heart and soul of the venue is the outer area with magnificents stands and a perfect area of green sward.

To acknowledge the heritage of the Adelaide Oval - built in 1871 for the South Australian Cricket Association, the old cricket scoreboard and the green mound and Moreton Bay fig trees at the northern end have been kept as has the brick facade at the back of the oval where the SACA museum is now housed.

The oval precinct houses changerooms, gymnasiums, indoor and outdoor training and  sporting facilities for players and further development is planned for the Memorial Drive Tennis venue at the back of the oval.

It has been described as "one of the most picturesque Test cricket grounds in Australia, if not the world" and is acclaimed by cricket greats as one of the great cricket grounds and by football experts as the most atmospheric football ground in Australia with world class facilities.

Since its renovation the venue has housed cricket, football, rugby and soccer internationals and numerous concerts. It is also possible to do a walk across the top of the grandstands from where one can get an amazing view of Adelaide - if one has a head for heights.

Definitely a must if you are visiting Adelaide.

  4. I'm sorry I didn't visit Adelaide on my one trip to Australia, not because of football, but because it seems to be a lovely city.
